Color, Light and What the Camera Can’t Capture
Why I create…
One of my earliest art-making memories is using my fist to move finger paints around the paper in kindergarten or first grade, and being fascinated by how the lines created an illusion of space or tunnels. I love playing with materials to see what they’ll do beyond the obvious! As an art teacher for 30 years, I have had the privilege of being able to explore so many media, from paint to clay to metalwork. As an adaptive arts specialist, creating art with people with a range of disabilities, I have explored many alternative non-traditional tools, which play a role in the creation of my own art.
My current medium of choice is oil pastels. I love the buttery, creamy feel of pushing them around the paper with various tools, layering and removing colors to enhance the illusion of light. The natural beauty of Colorado inspires my choice of subject matter, as most of my work is abstract landscape. I don’t work from a picture, rather I hope to capture the essence of a place…the warmth, the color, the light, the feeling of being there. You know that image the camera just won’t capture? That’s my vision. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
